My Natural Hair, Wash Day

Wash Day: Shampoo, anyone?

I’ve been trying to see how many weeks I can go without shampooing.  It had been 3 weeks since my last shampoo wash day.  Since then I’ve been conditioner washing (or co-washing) my scalp with each wash day.  But my scalp started itching me leading up to this wash day, so I knew it was time to shampoo.  I’m thinking biweekly shampoo days may be my thing.  It’s pretty consistent to what I had been doing with my hair for the past year (while relaxed), so I’ll continue to follow my scalp’s lead on this one.  Now, let’s get into these wash day details.

Wash Day Details

Pre-Shampoo Treatment.

This was day was light on Ayurveda, aside from my herbal oil infusion (recipe coming soon, but amla and brahmi are the stars of the show).  But the first thing I did was loosen my finger coils with aloe vera gel.  I applied  it to my hair and scalp.  Then I warmed my oil and I applied it to my hair and scalp.  I let that marinate on my hair covered with plastic for about an hour before rinsing.

Shampoo.

I brought back the Chagrin Valley Ayurvedic Shampoo Bar, which cleaned my scalp well.  It’s sulfate-free and gives me some suds action but not a lot.  And almost a week later my scalp is not itchy at all.  After rinsing the shampoo, I followed up with an ACV rinse (1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and about a cup of water) to combat my hard water.

Deep Condition.

I used the same deep conditioner as last week, which was Shea Moisture Manuka Honey with an added teaspoon of honey.  After sitting under the hooded dryer for about 20 minutes, I rinsed after another 40 minutes.

Even though my scalp was asking for shampoo, my hair felt so good last week.  And by comparison to last week my hair is feeling just ok now.  It’s not as soft and moisturized since shampooing this wash day.  When I compare the two wash days: last week I co-washed and deep conditioned overnight (almost 8 hours); and this week I shampooed, did an ACV rinse, and deep conditioned for one hour.

I’m thinking the combination of deep conditioning for less time and shampooing instead of co-washing has my hair feeling noticeably different from last week.  I would be inclined to push back my shampoo sessions, but for the fact that my scalp needed to be shampooed.  Instead when I shampoo next time, I’ll make sure to deep condition overnight and I hope that makes a difference in how my hair feels.

Leave-In Treatments.

I oiled my scalp with my herbal oil and coated my wet hair with The Mane Choice “Doesn’t Get Much Butter Than This” Shea Butter.  Then I created finger coils using Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel.

I must confess that this week’s finger coils were a no-go.  It’s lasting the whole week, but something about the way that the coils are laying makes me look real weird.  And therefore, there will be no photos of my hair this week.  It was bad enough I had to be in the real world like this.  The last thing I want to do is make it last forever on the internet, lol.  Note: The pictures above are my hair coated in oil right before I shampooed on my 37th day with natural hair.

Has anyone used a shampoo bar on their hair before? What are your thoughts?  This was my third time using this bar and it’s cool.
