Coconut Oil as a Daily Moisturizer = Brittle Hair?

Remember when I posted that I would be using Coconut Oil as my daily moisturizer?  Well, I heard your feedback loud and clear (on the blog and on instagram posts).  Coconut Oil hasn’t worked well for many of you as a daily moisturizer.  Many of you explained that when using it that often (daily or close to it) it leads to dry brittle hair.  And instead of pushing full steam ahead with my plans because they seem to make perfect sense to me in my head (like I did after the warnings you gave me about using ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo every week), I am heeding your warnings this time.  I appreciate you all for helping to steer me in the right direction — towards my healthy hair goals.  I trust you, so I’m listening.

Additionally, these three blog posts on the subject (see blog posts onetwo and three) backed what you all were saying.  If I didn’t take your warnings seriously after that I’d be a little more than stubborn.  If you checked out the three posts, they lead to the conclusion that coconut oil doesn’t work well for some, especially as a daily moisturizer.  Daily use adds too much coconut oil which swings the pendulum past the point of maximum benefits and into the arena of dry and brittle hair.  I don’t want that so rather than try (and possibly/most likely fail), I’m going to be using my Vatika Enriched Coconut Oil as my pre-poo/hot oil treatment instead.  I’ve never heard anyone complain about it when used in that capacity and I’ve already used it for two wash days so far with no complaints on my part.

Now that I’m not using coconut oil as a moisturizer and I’m not overly excited about using my other hair moisturizers, I went out a bought a new moisturizer to try: Jane Carter Solution Restore Moisture Mist.  I’ve only used it once, but so far I am a big fan.

Have any of you used this as your moisturizer? Thoughts?

  1. Coconut oil doesn't work for me even as a weekly prepoo. It's just too much. I get dry brittle hair every time. I'm sticking to the things that do work and eating the coconut oil instead.

I really want to try that Jane Carter moisture mist. Let us know how it works out.

  2. lol, I've never cooked with coconut oil, but I heard it's great for that as well. very healthy.

Aine, you're giving me pause about my pre-poo plans…hmm…I think I'll start with it on my ends only to see how it does as a pre-poo. I just really need a layer of protection from my sulfate shampoo.

    Thanks for commenting!

  3. Using it as a pre-poo can be an awesome idea! It helps prevent hygral fatigue!

  4. I used the Jane Carter by itself tonight as my leave-in and my hair is so soft. I'm really liking it. I will do a full review after I've had more time with this product.

  5. LOVE coconut oil as a weekly pre-poo. I can't use it as a daily sealer though. My hair just doesn't like it. I eat & cook with it as well 🙂 it's sooooo good for you.

  6. I love using coconut oil to prepoo even though i haven't done that in a while. I usually use it to seal my moisturizer on a daily or every other day , depending on how my hair feels. I hope its works for you as a prepoo

  7. Thanks, Jacoby Joy! At some point I'm sure I'll start using it for cooking too. I love coconuts. 🙂

  8. Thanks for the input, Tomes! I'm convinced about the coconut oil pre-poo. 🙂

  9. I absolutely LOVEEEE the Vatika coconut oil as a pre-poo step! Hopefully it works wonders on your hair. It has thickened up my hair and helps it to stay smooth and moisturized longer.
The only downside so far is that the ayurvedic herbs in it gave my hair a reddish-brown tint.

  10. Coconut oil definitely works for me as a prepoo. I had started using it as a daily moisturizer but stopped and just stick to it as my prepoo and it does not leave my hair brittle at all and i do use a diluted shampoo weekly when i wash. My hair holds moisture better when i wash with it instead of a sulfate free shampoo.

  11. Thanks, Sammy! You know I was looking at my ends this morning and thought they looked a little light. I had no idea that was a side effect. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  12. Thanks, Shantel. I'm going forward with Vatika Coconut Oil as my pre-poo. I'm hoping to get good results from it as well.

  13. I recently started using Coconut Oil as a pre-poo and sealant after I moisturize and so far so good. I used it while I was natural and found that it left my hair dry & brittle, but my relaxed hair seems to like it just fine.
