Daily Moisturizer: Coconut Oil, Maybe?

I’m still working on whittling down my stash of hair products, but as I use things up I like to think about the hair products I have and which ones I can do without.  And while I do love my Elasta QP Recovery Anti-Breakage Moisturizer, it is going to be one of the products that I let go. I haven’t quite finished using it yet, but I’ve pretty much made up my mind about this product.

The Pros and Cons of Elasta QP Recovery Anti-Breakage Moisturizer:  It was the first moisturizer that ever made my hair feel moisturized (instead of coated or nothing) after using it.  It contains mineral oil, which is a big no-no in the hair community.  But I didn’t notice the mineral oil when I first purchased it and it worked well moisturizing my straightened hair.  However, this product does nothing for my air dried hair.  And since my hair is air dried most weeks, it doesn’t get much use.  I think it’s time to say good-bye.  🙁

What am I going to use instead? Coconut Oil — well, Vatika Enriched Coconut Oil to be exact.  Coconut oil, like many other oils, is great for hair because it softens, conditions and adds shine.  But coconut oil is one of the few oils that actually penetrates the hair shaft and is slightly moisturizing.  Additionally, coconut oil is known for its ability to reduce protein loss, which is vital to a relaxed head like myself.

Have you used coconut oil as your daily hair moisturizer? How do you feel about it? What are you using to moisturize and/or seal your hair these days?

  1. I asked on Instagram too. And so far it's looking like a lot of people don't like it. It left their hair dry or it didn't absorb into the hair well. But I still want to give it a try and see how it works for me. I will be sure to update the blog with my thoughts on it.

  2. I've never used coconut oil as a moisturize but I've used it to seal. It works pretty well. I hope it works out for you.

  3. Thanks for sharing! Do you use pure coconut oil? And do you feel like you are light handed with it?

  4. Yes. I use pure coconut oil (Parachute brand). I usually mix it with hempseed oil but I also use it on its own. Generally, I tend to be heavy-handed with products. I've tried Vatika before but I didn't really like the smell and it was a bit lighter than the pure coconut oil.

  5. I mix in the cococnut oil in my moisturizer and seal with a thicker oil like jbco or sheabutter.

  6. Thanks, Abena! That might be what I do if the Vatika Oil doesn't work well on its own.

  7. In the ingredients lists of the vatika oil it says milk, is it cow milk or which milk?

  8. I don't like The Vatika coconut oil for sealing or daily moisturizing because it's infused with many drying herbs. As a pre-poo its awesome bc you the the benefit of the oil with ayurvedic herbs. THEN when you deep condition it leaves the hair strenghtened and soft at the same time.

Regular organic coconut oil is better for daily use BUT still be careful if using in colder temps bc it hardens in cooler temp.
