Wash Day Chronicles | Spring 2014

Even when I can’t blog, I make sure to keep up with my wash day routine.  Waist Length by December 2014 is still my goal.  So, I try not to go more than 2 weeks without squeezing in a wash day.  And because of my Use up My Stash Personal Challenge, I’ve been experimenting with various combinations of products with each wash day.  Below you’ll find what I’ve been up to lately.

Week 1: Blow Dry, Flat Iron and Curl (May 17)

Pre-Shampoo Treatment – African Royale Hot Six Oil
Shampoo – Organic Root Stimulator Creamy Aloe Shampoo
Protein Treatment – Aubrey Organics GPB (< 1 hour)
Deep Conditioner – Generic Value Products Conditioning Balm (< 1 hour)
T-Shirt Dry
Leave-In Conditioner – Roux Fermodyl 619 Extra Strength Leave In AND Generic Value Products Concentrated Leave In Treatment
Heat Serum – Elasta QP Silkening Polisher
Blow Dry on Low Heat with a Wide Tooth Comb
Finishing Spray – Proclaim Spray On Glosser
Flat Iron on 325 degrees Fahrenheit
Curl Ends with Curling Iron
Holding Spray – Sebastians Shaper Plus

Week 2: No Wash Day (May 24)

Week 3: Air Dry (May 31)

Pre-Shampoo Treatment – African Royale Hot Six Oil
Shampoo – Organic Root Stimulator Creamy Aloe Shampoo
Deep Conditioner – Darcy’s Botanicals Pumpkin Seed Moisturizing Conditioner (< 1 hour)
T-Shirt Dry
Leave-In Conditioner – Roux Treatment & Shine 619 Leave In
Bun

Week 4: Blow dry, Flat Iron and Curl (June 7)

Shampoo – Generic Value Products Tea Tree Shampoo
Deep Conditioner – Nexxus Humectress Ultimate Moisturizing Conditioner (< 1 hour)
T-Shirt Dry
Leave-In Conditioner – Generic Value Products ‘The Conditioner’ Leave In Treatment
Heat Serum – CHI Silk Infusion
Blow Dry on Low Heat with a Wide Tooth Comb
Finishing Spray – Proclaim Spray On Glosser
Flat Iron on 325 degrees Fahrenheit
Curl Ends with Curling Iron
Holding Spray – Sebastians Shaper Plus
After this wash day, I noticed some fraying at the ends of my hair, so I decided to go heat free for the rest of the month.

Week 5: Air Dry (June 14)

Shampoo: Generic Value Products Tea Tree Shampoo
Deep Conditioner: Darcy’s Botanicals Pumpkin Seed Moisturizing Conditioner (>1 hour)
Leave-In Treatment: Aphogee Green Tea and Keratin Restructurizer, Vatika Oil AND Darcy’s Botanical Lemongrass Transitioning Cream.

Conclusions

As far as comparing the wash days, I was most happy with my air dried results from Week 5.  The main differences between the Week 3 and Week 5 air drying routines — the leave in treatments.  For Week 5, I used the LOC method for my leave-in treatment and my mid week moisturizing, which has been great.  (It almost gives me the confidence to attempt a heat free summer).   Whereas for Week 3, I just used the Roux Treatment and Shine (a liquid leave-in).  Week 5’s hair is smoother, softer and way more manageable.  I’ve already “moisturized and sealed” twice this week using the LOC Method (water instead of the Aphogee).  I’ll definitely be trying the LOC method again with my next wash day, which will be another air dry routine.
Now as far as my flat ironing routine (Week 1 versus Week 4): Week 1 was smoother and silkier.  Plus the curls lasted longer.  I want to attribute it to the choice of Heat Serum (Elasta QP Silkening Polisher vs. Chi Silk Infusions) and using more protein products (protein treatment + protein leave-in vs. none), but the reality is there were several differences between the two wash days.  So the jury is still out on what truly made the difference, but I will keep you posted.
How have things been going with your hair?

  1. Hi Kim…how do you like the Darcy Pumkin Seed DC. will you buy it again?
You are glowing by the way!

  2. Hi Sammy, I actually like that DC a lot. It Doesn't seem like it doing much when I apply it to my hair (my hair soaks it right up. Even when I'm heavy handed), but my air dried hair always comes out it's softest and smoothest when I use it. I wasn't planning on buying again because I have to buy it online, but the more I get into this bottle the more I feel like I have to have it in my collection.

  3. Thanks for responding. I wanted a heavy duty DC for my NG on long stretches. Most youtube reviews are from Naturals so I figured it's exactly what I was looking. I cant' wait!!!
You can order from Amazon from AVEBAYOU beauty. shipping took 2 BUS days!!!
