Doing the Bare Minimum for My Hair Health

I think everyone goes through ups and downs in their hair journey.  And I’m sure neglect contributes to some of those down times.  When we neglect our hair regimens the inevitable next steps are damage and despair. Lately, I’ve been lingering in the realm of neglect.  Weekly wash days have not been happening and some of the steps in my typical wash day were missing as well.  I knew that I was not interested in completing my full regimen, so I tried to make a conscious decision to pare down my regimen.  But at the same time, I wanted my hair health to maintain.

My normal wash day routine includes: 
  • 15-30 minute pre-poo treatment/hot oil treatment;
  • shampoo;
  • monthly tea rinse;
  • bi-weekly/monthly protein treatment;
  • 30-60 minute deep conditioning treatment; and
  • air dry or roller set with leave-in treatments.
Recently my bi-weekly (at best) wash days were only guaranteed to include: (1) shampooing,(2)  a 15-20 minute deep conditioning treatment (loosely alternating between protein and moisture) and (3) then air drying into a bun.  And yes, I do love the no muss no fuss of the pared down regimen, but I know that it’s not the ideal situation for my hair.  My hope is that this incorporated enough moisture, strength and elasticity to ward off damage until I got out of my little rut and back on top of my ultimate (lol) hair regimen.  I guess only time will tell, but the plan is to get myself into gear and start back up with my normal wash day routine.

  1. When I do, I hide it away so it doesn't wreak havoc. Then I usually miss my hair and am so happy to have it "out" that the neglect is over. It's like playing peek a boo with myself. lol!

  2. My Wash days are often like yours with the exception that i always put coconut oil in My hair over night. I mostly Wash My hair at the gym ( deep condition in the sauna) so i dont Want to Carry a whole bunch of bottles in My bag. It works fine for me 🙂

  3. I'm experiencing something similar Kim. My slump is on now. I just can't be bothered with the amount of time that goes into dentangling on wash day, which is awful but I'd rather not touch my hair if I've lost my patience. My hair is doing okay at the moment but I probably should start caring for it more again.

  4. Hi 🙂 I get into a wash day slump every now and then and cut out steps. The one constant thing is deep conditioning- compromise would hurt my hair. Then I do what EbonyCPrincess does: hide it away then really miss it. lol

  5. I am also in a slump right now. The most I can be bothered to do is a "prepoo" with coconut oil, then a DC/co-wash, and I airdry in box braids and hide my hair under a wig. It seems to be working though, I will see when I do my 2 year anniversary length check

  6. Yes! For a while I thought I was the only one who went through hair slumps! I've shortened my wash days significantly to keep my slumps at bay then if I feel like doing the extras (prepoo, hot oil treatment, etc) I don't mind as much. Great post!

  7. I'm the same way. If I'm not in the mood, I don't force it. Because I know it will just lead to a rushed attempt and some frustration. I hope we can get out of the slump together.
