Something’s Got To Give…

It’s a new year and the main thing that has been on my mind has been to get rid of the excess, especially when it comes to my material possessions.  After recording my “What’s in My Hair Product Stash?” videos, one thing was abundantly clear to me:  I need to pare down my hair stash.  It’s just too much.  I plan to apply this to every corner of my home, but right now the area in most need of attention is my hair product stash.  You saw the video — you know exactly what I’m talking about.

First, I need to figure out what types of hair products I want to keep around:
  • For Cleansing. I’ll keep keep 2 out of 5:
    • a Moisturizing and a Neutralizing Shampoo.
  • For Moisturizing. I’ll keep 4 out of 16:
    • a Deep Conditioner; a Leave-In Treatment; an Oil for HOT; and a Daily Moisturizer.
  • For Strengthening. I’ll keep 3 out of 10:
    • a Protein Treatment; a Protein Leave-In Treatment; a Serum.
  • For Styling. I’ll keep 3 out of 5:
    • a scalp grease; a Gel; and a Hair Spray.
I feel like I’m making life decisions as I decide which hair product is going to fit into (read: win) each category. Here’s what I have to choose from:
GVP Tea Tree Oil Shampoo
ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo
Elasta QP Stop Action Conditioning Neutralizing Shampoo
Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo
GVP Moisturizing Conditioner
GVP Conditioning Balm
Darcey’s Botanical Pumpkin Seed Curl Moisturizing Conditioner

Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor

Second, use up the products that I will not repurchase.
Third, I have to make a commitment to make NO hair related purchases for 2014 (except relaxer, I only have one application left).
Fourth, report back when I’ve completed my mission.

If you had to choose keepers from my hair product collection, which ones would you choose?

  1. I am in the same boat and currently going through my stash too. Sometimes it's just overwhelming to wash my hair, etc because I have so much stuff. Here's my choices, can't wait to see what you choose and why.

Shampoos: Not sure about your choices I haven't used them. I tend to go for a moisturizing and a clarifying shampoo, since I'm salon relaxed.

Moisturizing: Nexxus Humectress, JBCO mixed w/Olive Oil, GVP Leave-in. Have you tried Darcy's Botanicals Daily Leave-in Conditioner? I like it as a leave-in and a daily moisturizer, so I feel like I get two products for one.

Strengthening: Aubrey Organics GBP Conditioner, Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer, CHI Silk Infusion

Styling: Sebastians Shaper Plus Hair Spray. Not familiar with your other choices.

  2. I started washing my hair this morning and started picking out things that I don't care too much for to do my hair (let's see how this wash day goes with that strategy :$ ). So far, I haven't use any of the items you listed above so, you've made some great choices! I like them all.

Thanks for commenting and good luck going through your stash!

  3. Oh my goodness! I saw the video you do have tons of products lol. How is the Aubrey Organics GBP Conditioner? I would say for sure to keep the Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea Restructurizer, most of the other items I'm not to familiar with but have had my eye on a few to try.

  4. Very good decision. I read somewhere that Americans spend 8 billion dollar on hair and beauty products. And that what's needed to supply the whole world with fresh water, is 7 billions…

Anyway, If I was you I'd keep the Darcys botanical products and for the rest apohgee. I've never understood the difference between moisturiser and leave-in. I use a moisturising leave-in so I only use one product. Maybe some one can explain.

  5. Oh man, my own stash is pretty big so I know how you feel. I'm trying to narrow mine down too. I've only gotten as far as cleansing & deep conditioning though. My largest group is leave-in/moisturizers. I'm trying a bunch of them to find a nicely moisturizing one.

I only have experience with a few of your products. I vote for the Darcy's products (conditioner especially), CHI Silk Infusion, and L'Oreal Total Repair Balm.

  6. WOW your stash is serious! Couple of months ago I started narrowing down my products. Glad I did :). Most of what is in your stash I've never heard of let alone use. I'd keep the Organix shampoo, Nexxus conditioner, JBCO, Dabur coconut oil, Chi infusion and Paul Mitchell serum.

  7. Mizani, Nexxus, JBCO, and Aubrey Organics all stick out to me as keepers. I too am working on using up my product stash…what a tedius process! Best of luck 🙂

  8. I know. *hangs head in shame*

I haven't tried the AO GBP yet, it was a part of my last trip buy things. But I'll be sure to share once I've used it. Thanks for commenting, Special K!

  9. Some leave-ins like the GVP The Conditioner (and GVP Concentrated Leave-in) do nothing to moisturize my hair when it's dry. It only works while wet, I'm not sure why, but that's what happened with my hair. For a while it was the only leave-in I used so if I wanted to moisturize mid week, I had to find something that actually moisturized my dry hair. Thanks for commenting, Lisa!

  10. Leave-ins is the largest component of my stash as well. I am determined to get through this stuff. I had my first wash day with the random assortment of hair products and my hair came out, ok. And I have a feeling I'm going to be having a lot more "ok" hair days while I work through this stuff. Thanks for commenting, Rileynak!

  11. Yes, it is. One of the few things that I KNOW I'll be keeping is the Nexxus Conditioner. Almost everything else, it could really go either way, because I really like a lot of what I have. Thanks for commenting, Niya!

  12. Thanks, Courtnea! It really is tedious. I found myself being heavy handed this weekend with my products because I just wanted to get through this phase as quickly as possible, smh.

  13. We are in the same boat! My product collection is not quite as extensive as yours, but I've found myself having a hard time just narrowing down each category to a couple of products. I think because if my hair really responds well to something, I don't want to give it up even if I already have a number of the same type of things that work well. I guess I like variety too much lol I hope you have better luck than me!

  14. I would definitely keep all the ORS , Aphogee & Elasta QP products. These are my staples. I'm in the process of using up products now. Good luck with yours.
