Relaxer Update: July 2013

Last weekend, I ended my relaxer stretch at 15 weeks.  If you’ve been following along, you know that I was avoiding heat tools for the majority of the that time period.  My initial thoughts, as I was rounding out the end of the challenge, were that I would try to continue to implement no heat wash days into my stretches, but I wasn’t really interested in continuing it as strictly.
Well, I proceeded with my relaxer day process and opted to roller set my hair instead of my typically (after relaxer) blow dry and flat iron session.  I wore my curls for a day before combing them out for my length check…

After taking my length check pictures, I realized that my ends were still thinning, which is frustrating because I really tried to handle them with care this time around.  My game plan for this next stretch is to really try to moisturize my hair daily.  I’ve never been able to remember to do this daily and so I quickly gave up on it, but I think that the ends of my hair could really benefit from some added attention during the weeks.  Some ladies on youtube recommended baggying, but I’m going to hold off on that for now.  I want to see if this added moisture helps me out.

And on the very bright side of things, I retained length! Yay!  I’m so excited about this because I didn’t really even realize it until I was editing the length comparison footage for the Relaxer Update video below.  When I imported the March 2013 length check footage I was shocked by the difference.  Now because of this “new found” added length I will absolutely continue my no heat regimen (and I will follow it more strictly than I had originally planned — how’s that for motivation, lol.). 😉

  6. Your curls look great! Great job on the length retention!

Have you ever heard of Salon Nui in north Raleigh? I was at a conference in May and I saw this woman with beautiful BSB/BSL hair. I found out she was from Raleigh and asked her where she got her hair done and this is the place. They are pretty affordable, too! When I move back, this may have to be my salon. I looked at the website and they look like they do great work!

As for M&Sing daily, the only reminder I need is the thought of broken ends! LOL! I may can go a few days without doing it when my hair is roller sat, but my air-dried hair must be or it will break off! To help combat thinning ends, I have used a semi-permanent rinse to help with my porous ends (I used Redken Shades EQ in March at the salon and Clairol Colorgloss in clear from Sally's in June). Since getting these rinses, my ends do not break nearly as much as before, which allows my hemline to look full. Good luck to you on the next relaxer stretch!

  7. Hmm … I got the salon's name all wrong! It's Ni Salon Spa http://www.nisalonspa.com/!

Nui? That word must be left over from my Hawaii days! While we are at it … here's your Hawaiian word for the day! "Nui" means big, large or plenty!

  8. Your hair looks great!! Stick to the limited heat and good luck on your next stretch 🙂

  9. Thank you! I use Elasta QP Recovery Anti-Breakage Moisturizer and Vatika Enriched Coconut Oil.

  10. Thanks, Ebony! Good luck to you. You've been doing a great job protecting your hair, so I'm sure you'll see retention. 🙂

  11. Lol, I need the thought of broken ends to be my daily reminder as well! I feel like I just need to insert it into my morning routine and keep it there(easier said than done, sometimes).

I've never heard of that salon, but sounds like they are doing something right. I'm going to have to look into them because I've never been able to find a decent hair salon here in Raleigh. Thanks for the heads up.

Also, I need to look into those rinses, I remember when EbonyCP from longing4length was talking about them. I never really latched on to it, but if they can help with my ends, then I'm all for it!

  12. Great retention! Oh and I love your length check shirt with all the brand names I was like she was at "Dick's" in March and now she is at "Comcast" lol I need to make a length shirt soon

  13. Thanks, I hope your relaxer day goes well too! I just subscribed to you blog, so hopefully I won't miss it!
