Relaxer Update: December 2012

Two weeks ago I followed my pre-relaxer wash day routine and flat ironed my hair straight to do a length check.  …I’m MBL (Mid back Length) y’all!  The plan was to relax the following weekend at 13 weeks post; however when the weekend finally rolled around, I just wasn’t feeling up to it.  But Thursday evening it was time to relax my hair because I had a holiday party to attend Friday night (I wasn’t trying to show up with messy hair).

Find more info on my flat ironed hair and my relaxer update after the jump…

Pre Relaxer Routine

What I did:
Shampoo: Mizani Phormula-7 Neutralizing & Chelating
Protein Treatment: Redken Extreme Strength Builder Plus
Deep Conditioner: GVP Humectress Conditioner
Leave-in: GVP The Conditioner
Towel Dry, then Blow Dry.
Serum: Chi Silk Infusion
And used my GVP Flat Iron @ 370F* degrees with Proclaim Spray On Glosser.
(I also trimmed my split ends as I flat ironed each section.)
*I don’t normally flat iron at that high of a temperature setting but because my roots were looking kind of crazy, I decided to go for it.  Even though my roots got super straight, I don’t think I’ll do that again.  I prefer the way my hair feels when I flat ironed half way between 325 and 370F.  It was super silky straight, but just a little too straight for my taste.

Length Check

Mid Back Length!

Relaxer Day
Once relaxer day finally came along, I made sure to relax, neutralize, deep condition and rollerset all before my favorite Thursday night shows came on (Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal — best shows ever!).  I didn’t sit under the dryer during the shows because I knew I wouldn’t be able to hear anything.  But once I got my emotions in check (after Scandal), I sat under the dryer for 30 minutes and went to bed with the rollers in my head.  It was an uncomfortable night, but I got through it without any aches and pains the next morning, so it was a success.

What I Did:

  4. You're my HAIRspiration Kim!! Congrats on reaching MBL! Ps. I need those rollers in my life lol x

  5. Thank you! It's funny because I believe it when I see the picture but I can't quite confirm it in real life. It's just too crazy for me accept. That's why I had to write it down — so it could settle in that that is me and I am MBL.

  6. Thanks so much! I'm really impressed with the bounce of my recent sets too. And I was afraid that the results wouldn't be too good because I forgot to use my Aphogee Keratin Spray but I guess technique trumps products sometimes. Thanks for commenting and reading my blog!

  7. Wow, thanks Vanessa! I'm honored. I wish I knew you wanted magnetic rollers a few months ago. I had a shoe box full of purple ones that I just had sitting around for years, but I dropped them off at Good Will. Next time I've got unused hair stuff sitting around, I might make a post to see if anyone's interested before I give it away (or throw it away). Thanks for commenting!

  8. Your hair came out absolutely gorgeous! I think I just drooled a little! lol

  9. Wow! Love your curls! You really are a pro in your hair journey 🙂 Congrats

  10. Your hair looks gorge. Wasn't it yesterday you reached BSL? Congratulations on reaching MBL!

  11. Yes, ma'am. It took no time to get to MBL. I need to look back and see how long it actually was. But getting here from BSL was nothing compared trying to get to BSL from APL — THAT was a journey, lol.
